— and Which One Is Right for Your Dog?
If you've ever searched for a joint supplement for your dog, you'll know just how confusing it can be.
Glucosamine. Chondroitin. Green-lipped mussel. MSM. Collagen. UC-II. Fish oil. Turmeric. Hyaluronic acid. Deer velvet. Deer peptides...
And then there are products containing combinations of five, six, eight or even more ingredients.
So how do you know which one is right for your dog?
The truth is, there isn't one magic ingredient — or one "best" joint supplement — that is going to suit every dog.
Instead, I think it helps to understand what the different ingredients actually are, what role they play in the body, and why they are included in joint-support formulas.
Once you understand that, choosing between all those different products becomes a whole lot easier.
First, what are we actually trying to support?
A dog's joints are wonderfully complicated structures.
Cartilage covers the ends of the bones and provides a smooth surface for movement. Synovial fluid helps lubricate the joint, while collagen is an important structural protein found throughout connective tissues.
There are also many other components involved in maintaining normal joint function.
This is why different joint supplements can take very different approaches.
Some focus on cartilage and connective tissue. Others provide omega-3 fatty acids or other nutrients associated with maintaining a healthy inflammatory response. Some combine several of these approaches.
And this is why more ingredients doesn't automatically mean a better supplement.
Let's take a look at some of the ingredients you are most likely to come across.
Glucosamine
Glucosamine is probably one of the first ingredients most people think of when they hear the words "dog joint supplement".
It is a naturally occurring compound involved in the formation of components found in cartilage and connective tissues.
You'll commonly see either glucosamine hydrochloride or glucosamine sulfate on a label, and it is often combined with chondroitin.
Glucosamine has been used in canine joint formulas for many years, although research into glucosamine and chondroitin has produced mixed results.
So I wouldn't choose a product simply because the label says "glucosamine".
It's worth looking at the whole formulation and understanding why the manufacturer has chosen the particular combination of ingredients.
Chondroitin
Chondroitin is another naturally occurring component of cartilage and is commonly paired with glucosamine.
It is associated with cartilage structure and the normal characteristics of joint tissues and synovial fluid.
You'll often see glucosamine and chondroitin together because they have complementary roles.
Again, though, the presence of an ingredient doesn't automatically tell you everything about a product.
The formulation, quality of the ingredients and the individual dog's needs all matter.
Green-Lipped Mussel
Now we get to one of my favourites — and one that is particularly special to us here in New Zealand.
Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a New Zealand marine ingredient that naturally contains a range of nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, glycosaminoglycans and other marine compounds.
This makes it quite different from simply adding one isolated nutrient to a formula.
Green-lipped mussel has also been studied as a nutritional ingredient for canine joint support.
One thing I think is particularly useful to understand is that green-lipped mussel and fish oil aren't necessarily interchangeable.
Fish oil is primarily valued as a source of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids.
Green-lipped mussel provides omega-3s too, but as part of a broader naturally occurring nutrient profile.
That's one of the reasons you'll see green-lipped mussel appearing in so many natural joint-support formulas.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids — EPA and DHA
Omega-3 fatty acids are another important ingredient to understand.
The two you'll most commonly hear about are:
EPA — eicosapentaenoic acid
DHA — docosahexaenoic acid
These long-chain marine omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish oils, marine oils and naturally in ingredients such as green-lipped mussel.
But here's a useful tip when comparing products:
Don't just look for the words "fish oil".
If omega-3 support is one of the reasons you're choosing a product, look at whether the manufacturer tells you how much EPA and DHA the product provides.
Two products can both contain fish oil while providing very different amounts of EPA and DHA.
So "contains fish oil" doesn't necessarily tell you very much on its own.
MSM
MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane.
It is a naturally occurring sulfur-containing compound and is another popular ingredient in joint-support formulas.
You'll often find MSM combined with glucosamine, chondroitin, green-lipped mussel or collagen.
Rather than choosing a product simply because it contains MSM, I think it's more useful to consider it as one part of the overall formulation.
What other ingredients are included?
Why have they been chosen?
And do they complement one another?
And then there's collagen...
This is where things can get a little confusing.
You may have noticed that some joint supplements contain "collagen", while others contain something called UC-II or undenatured Type II collagen.
They're both collagen — but they aren't the same thing.
Hydrolysed Collagen
Hydrolysed collagen has been broken down into smaller collagen peptides during processing.
In simple terms, you're providing the body with collagen-derived peptides and amino acids that can be used as nutritional building blocks.
Hydrolysed collagen can come from different sources, including bovine and marine sources.
UC-II — Undenatured Type II Collagen
UC-II is quite different.
It is undenatured Type II collagen, meaning the collagen's original structure is deliberately preserved rather than being broken down into smaller peptides.
Why does that matter?
Because UC-II isn't being used simply as a source of collagen building blocks.
It is used for a different proposed biological mechanism involving the immune system's interaction with Type II collagen.
In very simple terms:
Hydrolysed collagen → provides collagen-derived peptides and amino acids.
Undenatured Type II collagen → preserves the collagen structure and is intended to work through a different mechanism involving oral immune tolerance.
So when you see "collagen" on a label, don't automatically assume that all collagen supplements are interchangeable.
They aren't.
And this is a great example of why it's worth looking beyond the big words on the front of a packet and understanding exactly what is inside.
Deer Velvet and Deer Peptides
If you're in New Zealand, there's another ingredient you are quite likely to come across when looking at natural joint supplements — deer velvet and deer-derived peptides.
New Zealand has a long history of deer farming and deer velvet production, so it isn't surprising that deer-derived ingredients have become increasingly interesting in the world of nutritional supplements.
But there is an important difference between deer velvet and deer peptides.
What is deer velvet?
Deer velvet is the soft, developing tissue that covers a deer's growing antler before it becomes hard bone.
It is a naturally complex tissue containing a variety of proteins, peptides, collagen, glycosaminoglycans, minerals and other compounds.
Because of this unique composition, deer velvet has attracted considerable interest as a nutritional ingredient.
So what are deer peptides?
Peptides are small chains of amino acids.
Our bodies naturally use amino acids and peptides in countless processes, including the production and maintenance of proteins such as collagen.
But some peptides can also have biological activity of their own. These are often referred to as bioactive peptides.
So is it just deer velvet?
No — and this is where it gets interesting.
Whole deer velvet contains a broad mixture of naturally occurring compounds.
Deer peptide ingredients undergo further processing designed to isolate and concentrate particular bioactive components.
That doesn't necessarily make it "better" than whole deer velvet — they're simply different ingredients with different characteristics.
What does this have to do with joints?
Healthy joints rely on much more than just cartilage.
Connective tissue, collagen, bone and the tissues surrounding the joint all play important roles in normal movement and mobility.
The interest in deer peptides comes from their combination of bioactive peptides and amino acids, including components associated with collagen support.
Rather than thinking of deer peptides as simply another source of collagen, it is more accurate to think of them as a specialised source of deer-derived peptides and amino acids that may contribute to the nutritional support of connective tissue and musculoskeletal health.
Research into deer-derived peptides is continuing, and researchers are interested in a number of their biological properties.
However, we don't think it is helpful to make enormous claims about what these peptides can do.
The science is still developing, and the exact properties of a deer peptide ingredient depend on the source material and the extraction and concentration process used.
Sometimes the most honest answer is:
There's something very interesting here, but we're still learning exactly how all of the individual components work.
And that's one of the things that makes new nutritional ingredients so fascinating.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body and is an important component of synovial fluid.
Because synovial fluid helps lubricate joints, hyaluronic acid is often included in joint-support formulas with the goal of supporting normal joint lubrication and movement.
It's another example of an ingredient that plays a different role from something like glucosamine or collagen.
Turmeric and Curcumin
Turmeric is another ingredient you'll find in many natural joint-support products.
One of the main groups of compounds found in turmeric is the curcuminoids, including curcumin.
Curcumin has been extensively researched for its interaction with inflammatory and oxidative pathways.
However, there's an important consideration here:
Not all turmeric products are the same.
The amount of curcuminoids, the form used and the way the product is formulated can all affect how the active compounds are available.
So again, simply seeing "turmeric" on the label doesn't tell you the whole story.
Boswellia
Boswellia is a plant extract that is sometimes included in joint-support formulas.
Its active compounds, known as boswellic acids, have been studied for their interaction with inflammatory pathways.
It isn't as common as glucosamine or green-lipped mussel in dog joint products, but it's another ingredient you may come across when comparing formulas.
Eggshell Membrane
This is a less familiar ingredient, but an interesting one.
Eggshell membrane naturally contains collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycans and other structural compounds.
You won't find it in every joint supplement, but it is another ingredient you may come across in products aimed at joint and connective tissue support.
What about all the other ingredients?
There are plenty of other ingredients you may come across, including:
- Avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU)
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Manganese
- Boron
- Other plant extracts and antioxidants
Some are included to support connective tissue or collagen formation, while others provide nutritional or antioxidant support.
But this brings me to something I think is really important when choosing any supplement.
Don't be impressed by the longest ingredient list
It can be very tempting to look at two products and think:
"This one has 12 ingredients, so it must be better than the one with three."
Not necessarily.
A well-designed formula doesn't need to contain every ingredient imaginable.
What matters is whether the ingredients have been thoughtfully selected and whether they make sense together.
And this is where I think it's important to look beyond the front of the packet.
Read the whole label — not just the marketing
When you're comparing supplements, have a look at the complete ingredient list.
Some products will tell you the exact amount of every individual ingredient.
Others may use a proprietary blend or a specific formulation without breaking down the precise amount of every component.
Neither approach automatically tells you whether a product is good or bad.
A proprietary blend doesn't necessarily mean a product is inferior. Manufacturers may choose to protect the specific formulation or ratios they have developed.
Instead, ask yourself:
What ingredients are actually in this product?
Why have they been included?
Does the formulation make sense?
Is there a clear recommended serving?
Does the manufacturer provide enough information for me to understand what I'm buying?
And if you have questions, are they willing to answer them?
Transparency is important, but the absence of an individual quantity for every ingredient isn't, on its own, a reason to dismiss a product.
And what about the "inactive" ingredients?
This is another part of the label that is easy to overlook.
Some ingredients aren't there to provide the main nutritional benefit of the supplement.
They may be included for perfectly practical reasons — such as helping preserve the product, prevent moisture or clumping, improve texture or make a tablet or powder easier to manufacture or use.
But it's still worth asking:
Why is this ingredient in here?
Does it serve a useful purpose?
Or am I paying for a long list of additional ingredients that aren't contributing to what I'm actually looking for?
This doesn't mean that a shorter ingredient list is automatically better.
It simply means that it's worth understanding what you're paying for.
So... which joint supplement should you choose?
This is probably the question you really wanted answered!
And unfortunately, there isn't a simple one-size-fits-all answer.
Instead, I'd start by asking:
What am I actually looking for?
Looking for general everyday joint support?
You might want to look at a well-rounded formula containing several complementary ingredients.
For example, you may come across combinations of green-lipped mussel, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM or collagen.
Interested specifically in omega-3 support?
Look for products that provide EPA and DHA and consider how much they actually provide.
Interested in collagen?
Find out what type of collagen you're getting.
Remember:
Hydrolysed collagen and UC-II are not the same thing.
They represent two different approaches to using collagen for joint support.
Interested in deer-derived ingredients?
Find out whether the product contains whole deer velvet, deer velvet extract or a more specifically concentrated deer peptide ingredient.
These aren't necessarily interchangeable either.
Looking for a more comprehensive formula?
Look for ingredients that complement each other rather than simply a long list of ingredients that sound impressive.
A thoughtful three-ingredient formula can make much more sense than twelve ingredients that have simply been added to make the label look impressive.
Think about the whole dog
Joint nutrition isn't just about supplements.
Maintaining a healthy body weight, feeding a nutritious diet and providing appropriate exercise all play an important role in helping dogs stay active and mobile.
And if your dog is showing signs of pain, lameness, significant stiffness or a sudden change in mobility, that's something to discuss with your veterinarian rather than simply reaching for a supplement.
A nutritional supplement should be part of a bigger picture of caring for your dog's overall wellbeing.
So what's the "best" joint supplement?
After looking at all of these ingredients, I think the answer becomes much clearer.
The best joint supplement isn't necessarily the one with the most ingredients.
It's the one where you understand:
- What the ingredients are
- Why they have been included
- How they complement one another
- What else is in the product and why
- Whether the manufacturer is transparent and trustworthy
- And whether the product is appropriate for your individual dog
So don't just look at the picture on the front of the packet.
Turn it around.
Read the label.
Understand the ingredients.
Ask questions.
And don't be afraid to look past the marketing.
Because once you understand what you're actually looking at, choosing a joint supplement becomes a whole lot less confusing.
